Andres half listened to the conversation Dimitri and Ria were having, trusting his friend to keep her amused while he considered Kentwood. He had seen the man lean down to speak with her and, noting her expression in response, wanted to know what vileness he was spreading. Vince had stepped between them before Andres could react and he trusted his brother to keep an eye on her. She was important to his family. His friends accepted her the night before, hesitantly at first, but warming to her after a few games were played and beverages imbibed.
While contemplating whether he should have a word with Kentwood, and trying to ignore how the man looked at Ria, Abigale tried to grab his attention. He had listened to her at first but quickly grew bored with the conversation. It was hard to hold his attention for long. Ria was the only woman who had managed so far. Even his past mistresses in London could only keep his attention for a few weeks. He wondered if it had anything to do with the mental connection he shared with Ria.
Perhaps his grandmother was correct, and it was time he took a wife. He hadn’t realized how obsessed he had become with his work until Ria had entered his life to distract him. The path his life had taken since becoming the Duke of Northumberland wasn’t healthy. His father had met an early end from overindulgence, having more interest in women and gambling than his duties to his family.
Andres had taken his responsibilities in the opposite direction. He built his family’s lands and fortunes to twice what they had been when he inherited, and they continued to grow. Perhaps it was time he focused on the next generation. He would have to think about it in greater detail.
“Andres,” Ria said, placing her hand on his arm, startling him from his reverie.
“Yes?” he replied, ignoring Abigale’s sniff of disdain. He hadn’t heard a word she’d spoken to him anyhow.
“Dimitri was telling me how you stole his home in Greece,” she said, her eyes filled with laughter.
He sniffed and laughed, “Yes, he loves to tell that story though he never gets it quite right. It involves two pistols, a table, and a donkey. Here is what really happened.”
